TL;DR

Dan Houser blames himself for the perceived failure of Max Payne 3, citing a lack of appeal compared to Sam Lake's original writing.

Rockstar co-founder and lead writer Dan Houser says he failed with Max Payne 3. In an interview with IGN, Houser stated that a large amount of the game's failure was his fault. He believes players missed the writing of original creator Sam Lake.

Houser says he enjoyed the process of writing a linear, 12 hour movie experience rather than an open world game. He claims the consensus at thetime was that people hated the game. He admits the game was not as successful as it should have been.

While Houser is critical of his own work, Eurogamer and PC Gamer both argue that the game was a publisher disappointment. In 2012, Take-Two Interactive reported that lower than expected sales led to a loss of $110 million for that financial quarter. However, Eurogamer notes that the game was critically acclaimed at launch.

Remedy and Rockstar are currently working on a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2. Remedy stated two years ago that the project has entered full production.
