Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited after player backlash

TL;DR

Jagex scrapped the Reignited character type less than two weeks after announcing it. The December 2 update will still include the Adventure Guide and Remastered Journey.

Jagex canceled RuneScape Reignited on October 15. The studio revealed the new character type at RuneFest 2026 alongside RuneScape 4. Reignited characters were planned for a December 2 launch. They would have used a separate economy, Grand Exchange, and hiscores. These characters would have required their own membership and were barred from trading or sharing boss instances with Veteran characters.

Players argued the system would fracture the player base. Jagex apologized on October 6. Three days later, the company proposed changes that would allow players to Reignite an existing character using their current membership.

Mod Ryan stated on October 15 that the studio missed the mark. He noted that the project will not move forward. Ryan referenced a previous instance where Jagex ignored feedback on combat, which he said took over a decade for the game to recover from. The studio is still proceeding with other parts of the December 2 update. This includes the first part of the Remastered Journey and the Adventure Guide.
