Halo 64 brings multiplayer and Firefight to Nintendo 64
TL;DR
Modders released a Nintendo 64 port of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer built with decompiled source code and AI assistance. Players need a PC and an original Xbox copy to generate a playable ROM.
Modders have brought Halo: Combat Evolved to the Nintendo 64. The experimental project runs natively on the console or through emulators, featuring multiplayer and Firefight modes. The creator relied on community project files to build the experience. Anthropic's Claude AI assisted in writing the code.
Getting the port running requires a Windows or Linux PC to convert original Xbox asset files into a playable ROM using tools from the project page. Players must supply a legally obtained copy of the original game. The build supports local four-player split-screen and AI bots with four difficulty settings. Running it on original hardware via a flashcart requires the 4MB Expansion Pak. The campaign mode is absent.
