RTX 5090 mod drops cable temperature by 20°C using four 8-pin connectors
TL;DR
A modder, DallasGrave, created a conversion that uses four 8-pin PCIe connectors to power an RTX 5090, reportedly reducing cable temperatures by 20°C.
A Reddit user known as DallasGrave has developed a Quad 2×8 Header Conversion for the RTX 5090 to address overheating in 16-pin 12V-2×6 connectors. The modification uses a custom board soldered to the motherboard's native connector points to distribute power through four traditional 8-pin PCIe connectors. This setup uses twelve 12V wires instead of the six found on the standard 16-pin connector. DallasGrave reports that at 600W, this reduces the current per wire to between 4.1A and 4.4A. This change reportedly drops cable temperatures by approximately 20°C. Tests using shunt modifications reached 800W while maintaining a PCB temperature of about 45°C. DallasGrave is planning to produce custom backplates and modules compatible with different models, including Founders Edition cards.
