A Reddit user reports that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in an Alienware Area 51 desktop is tied to its specific motherboard. The user found that the CPU cannot be used in third-party motherboards from manufacturers like Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte.
The lockout reportedly uses AMD Platform Secure Boot (PSB) technology. This feature uses one-time programmable fuses to bind the CPU to a specific OEM firmware code-signing key. That cryptographic signature is required for the processor to run any BIOS software. If the CPU is moved to a different motherboard, the system will fail to POST and typically flag a processor failure.
It is unclear if Dell's implementation allows PSB to trigger and permanently fuse a new CPU to the platform if a user attempts an upgrade.
