AMD and Intel align on oneDNN for x86 AI acceleration
TL;DR
The two companies will adopt oneDNN as a common x86 framework for PyTorch, while AMD gradually migrates its ZenDNN features.
Both chipmakers have agreed on a common framework for accelerated x86 tasks. Industry leaders note that oneDNN will act as the primary open-source library for PyTorch integration. This follows a recommendation from the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, according to Intel.
AMD plans to integrate its ZenDNN optimizations into oneDNN gradually. AMD is also joining the UXL Foundation as a Steering Member.
A unified foundation does not guarantee that both manufacturers will run identical machine code or that tailored adjustments will vanish. The software layer can still pick distinct routines depending on the underlying hardware.
Intel and AMD have not published independent benchmarks to quantify the effects of this consolidation on performance. Current ZenDNN features will not vanish immediately. AMD still maintains ZenDNN separately, offering distinct PyTorch builds and documentation.
