Steam Client beta re-enables HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED

TL;DR

Valve's latest Steam Client beta update brings back HDR streaming for the Steam Deck OLED and expands Remote Play features across multiple operating systems.

The company stopped supporting high dynamic range for remote sessions on its portable gaming device in October near the time of the Big Art Mode patch. Valve never specified why the feature was pulled, though reports pointed to bugs and issues with the hardware. A recent Steam Client beta update brings the feature back with a complete overhaul of Remote Play.

The preview update adds new display modes. The automatic setting turns HDR on only when detecting HDR content, while the constant setting supports increased illumination levels for standard dynamic range media.

Valve also expands HDR Remote Play to other platforms in the beta. It works on Windows for both games and the desktop, on the Linux desktop via Pipewire, when streaming from macOS, and on Android devices running Android 15 or newer through Steam Link.
