Memory supplier Macronix is shifting capital entirely to eMMC and NAND, according to industry analyst David Gibson.
Nintendo memory supplier Macronix is phasing out its ROM chip business to focus entirely on eMMC and NAND memory. Industry analyst David Gibson reports that the company will no longer develop new ROM chips, making the third quarter the final period for separate ROM financial reporting.
ROM products accounted for 5 percent of Macronix revenue in the third quarter, down from 26 percent during the same period last year. Segment sales declined 39 percent year over year, though they rose 9 percent from the previous quarter. No portion of the NT$37.8 billion spending budget is assigned to ROM manufacturing.
Gibson states that physical Nintendo Switch 2 game cards will not disappear immediately because Macronix is not the sole supplier. However, the shift could accelerate digital distribution and Game-Key Cards. Digital software sales accounted for 61.5 percent of total sales from April to June. Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch 2 has reached 23.68 million units sold worldwide, surpassing the GameCube lifetime total of 21.74 million units.
