TL;DR

Obsidian Entertainment is testing Beta updates for Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire that add full controller support and a reworked Turn-Based Mode.

Obsidian Entertainment released beta updates for Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire on November 4, 2026. Both games now support controllers throughout the entire experience. In Deadfire, this includes naval combat. Obsidian says players can switch between a controller and mouse and keyboard at any time.

The update for Deadfire also reworks its Turn-Based Mode. Obsidian says turns now follow character speed and combat is more lethal. Players can now change gear or consume items without using up their turn. The patch also includes fixes for Deadfire's quests, audio, combat, and interface.

Steam Deck players can now use the virtual keyboard to enter character names. The updates are in public testing, though some users note that character creation navigation feels slower and screen button prompts take up a lot of space on the Steam Deck display.

Obsidian hopes to release these updates for everyone by the end of the year. Both games are $29.99 each on Steam.

To access the new features, select "Public Test" for the first game and "Beta" for the second game in the Steam Properties menu.
