Early access players have given the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign a 93% recommendation rate on Steam, according to reports. Those who pre-ordered were able to play the story starting on October 16, a week prior to the global launch on October 23. While current Steam reviews carry a "0 hours played" tag, players have praised the visuals and gameplay.

Modern Warfare 4 features two distinct progression tracks. Multiplayer progression covers 55 levels and unlocks weapons, equipment, perks, and killstreaks. DMZ features a separate 70-level track that unlocks gear, station upgrades, 3D printer recipes, and operator skins. XP earned in DMZ contributes to the 55-level Multiplayer progression, but XP from Multiplayer or Warzone does not contribute to DMZ levels.

The game includes two Prestige paths. Classic Prestige trades level unlocks and custom class progress for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token, and cosmetic rewards. Regular Prestige restarts progression from Level 1 while retaining previous unlocks and custom class items. The system includes 10 Prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels.
