Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 moves the series to Age 1000, a period featuring West City and original characters designed by Akira Toriyama. Dimps is introducing a mentor system where players use collectible MistyPix items to summon characters through the Fortuneteller Gal. These 130 characters, which include non-playable figures, offer missions to increase bond levels and unlock abilities via individual skill trees.

Combat customization includes Soul Assist, which allows players to summon support characters like Dende or Gogeta Blue during fights, and Soul Switch, which lets players temporarily assume the appearance and fighting capabilities of another character. Players can also use race-specific Awoken Skills, such as Super Saiyan transformations. These transformations no longer run on a fixed timer and instead depend on how players manage their Ki.

A new Fighting Style system allows players to inherit the specific movements, animations, and combos of other characters. For example, equipping Whis' fighting style grants the character his staff-based attacks, though the staff provides no statistical advantages. The game also features online cooperative PvE missions.
