Executive producer Mark Darrah says shifting EA deadlines prevented BioWare from making major changes to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Darrah noted that while the project was in development for nearly a decade, much of that time was spent under the pressure of being less than 2 years from launch.
During 2017, personnel working on Dragon Age, such as Darrah, were moved over to assist with Anthem. That project was later rebooted from its original direction, codenamed Joplin, into a live-service game codenamed Morrison. Darrah said that period was the only opportunity the team had enough time to fundamentally reconsider the Dragon Age project.
After Darrah returned to the project in 2019, Dragon Age 4 targeted a late-2022 release. Darrah said that subsequent incremental delays and pivoting back to creating a single-player experience kept the project close to its next deadline. He argued that setting a firm release date earlier could have given the team more flexibility to address player choice, consequences, and reactivity. Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024.
