Embark Studios says the use of generative AI for voice lines in ARC Raiders was necessary to handle large amounts of dialogue and maintain rapid update speeds.
Embark Studios has acknowledged that criticism regarding its use of generative AI for voice lines in ARC Raiders is fair. Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal said the studio expected potentially rocky reactions after using similar technology in THE FINALS.
ARC Raiders · official art via IGDBThe studio uses a combination of real actor recordings and text-to-speech technology. Audio director Bence Pajor said the team uses recordings from actors to create training data for prototyping and to change voices. Pajor explained that recording every possible version of dialogue for features like the ping system is impractical and would be too much for actors to read.
The developers say the AI use allows for a rapid cadence of game updates. CCO Stefan Strandberg said the studio is not looking to replace actors and is not using generative AI in other areas of the game. Design director Virgil Watkins added that the team has no plans to increase the use of generative AI.
