A forum user reports receiving a fake Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 from Amazon. The user bought two chips that arrived in sealed retail boxes. While the top of the chips matched the official markings, the undersides were different.
The counterfeit processor features a central void filled with microscopic parts. Authentic versions feature contact pads across the entire bottom surface. Forum commenters suggest a scammer delidded a real 9950X3D2, attached its heat spreader to an Intel processor, and returned it to Amazon for a refund. Competitor processors position these tiny components underneath rather than on top.
The lettering on the fake chip appears smudged. It is not clear which Intel CPU is underneath the heat spreader. Amazon has not commented on the matter. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 has an $899 launch price. Reports say Amazon previously sold a fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D that was actually a 2011-era FX-4100 with a sticker on top.
