Linux 7.4 to orphan old EDAC drivers due to AI-generated bug reports

TL;DR

Linux maintainers are orphaning several old EDAC drivers in Linux 7.4 to avoid an increase in AI-generated bug reports and patches.

Linux maintainers are orphaning several old Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) drivers in Linux 7.4. These drivers will be removed in a subsequent kernel release. Maintainers say the move responds to increased noise from AI and LLM-generated bug reports and patches for hardware that is likely no longer used in production.

The drivers being orphaned include the i82975x driver for the Intel 975X Express chipset, the x38 driver for the Intel X38 MCH, the i3200 driver for Intel 3200/3210 chipsets, and the xgene driver for the AppliedMicro X-Gene SOC.

Linux 7.4 also introduces the Intel BFF driver, which acts as a Bit Fix Filter to manage aging silicon and stuck bits. Additionally, the update includes a dummy EDAC driver for testing EDAC core code within virtual machines.
