DLSS 5 mods increase RTX 4090 performance to 80 FPS in The Witcher 3
TL;DR
Two new mods combine NVIDIA's DLSS 5 with Foveated Rendering to increase frame rates by approximately 67 percent on an RTX 4090 in a 7,680 x 2,160 test.
Two new mods, Foveated DLSS5 and CheekyFoveatedDLSS, combine NVIDIA's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering with Foveated Rendering to reduce the detail level of the neural model outside a configurable central area. Maximedgoulet's tests in The Witcher 3 show an RTX 4090 running at approximately 48 FPS at 7,680 x 2,160 resolution using DLSS 5 Neural Rendering in 2x multipass mode. Enabling the Foveated Rendering mod increased that frame rate to around 80 FPS, an increase of approximately 67 percent.
Foveated DLSS5 operates as a ReShade extension, while CheekyFoveatedDLSS can function as a standalone integration. NVIDIA does not offer an official Foveation feature for DLSS 5 on standard monitors. Because these are modding solutions, stability, compatibility, and artifacts depend on the game and the specific configuration used.
The performance gain depends on the size of the high-quality central zone and the selected quality falloff rate. Smaller central areas deliver higher FPS but may cause visible quality loss at the edges of the screen. These mods use static foveation that keeps the high-quality area in the center of the screen rather than following the user's gaze. Users may notice reduced quality in HUD elements, menus, minimaps, or fine geometry at the edges of the image.
Background In October, a new DLSS 5 neural rendering model was released that first appeared in NBA 2K27 on October 16. Our earlier story
