A modder named Arhkain is developing a project called Retro Forever to transform World of Warcraft Forever into a first-person RPG. The mod uses 2D sprites for hands, weapons, and spell-casting to mimic the style of 1990s games like Doom, Hexen, Heretic, and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.

Arhkain says the project is currently in early stages and is not available for public download. The developer is focusing on perfecting the Mage class before potentially adding other classes if there is enough interest.

Development moved to a community-driven framework called ForeverAuras because Blizzard has implemented tighter restrictions on combat mods, which previously made it difficult to sync animations with the combat log. Arhkain says the mod is running inside the World of Warcraft Forever beta.
