Ryzen 7 9800X3D thermal throttling may be fixed by BIOS update, user claims
TL;DR
A Reddit user claims updating the BIOS on an MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi dropped their Ryzen 7 9800X3D temperatures from 95°C to 86°C.
A Reddit user claims that a BIOS update resolved thermal throttling issues on their Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The user, nathandrake84, reported that the CPU would immediately hit 95°C and throttle under load. This occurred despite the use of two different 360mm AIO liquid coolers.
After applying an update to an MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard, the user says the CPU now runs at 86°C without throttling. While 95°C is the maximum operating temperature for the chip according to AMD, the user noted the temperature drop helped stop the throttling. The user did not state which BIOS version they used before the update. The fix may have addressed a firmware bug or simply returned the system to optimized default settings.
