Sony reportedly secured an exclusive custom AMD RDNA 5 chip for its rumored PlayStation handheld, according to analyst Richard Leadbetter.

Sony has reportedly secured an exclusive arrangement for a custom AMD RDNA 5 chip in its unannounced PlayStation handheld, according to analyst Richard Leadbetter and hardware insider KeplerL2.

The reported deal would leave competing handheld manufacturers, including Xbox and Valve, unable to acquire the bespoke processor. Insiders state that AMD is reluctant to allocate engineering resources to custom chips for lower-volume products without guaranteed order volumes, making Sony likely the sole company to commit to the required orders.

Earlier reports from hardware insiders point to specific unconfirmed specifications for the device, including a six-core CPU with four Zen 6 cores and two Zen 6 Low Power cores, or alternatively six Zen 6 cores paired with 16 RDNA 5 compute units and 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory. A Linux system update has supposedly given weight to these hardware claims. Another unnamed insider claims the portable device will cost over $600.

Sony and AMD have not officially confirmed the hardware, price, release timing, or specific RDNA 5 features. The system would also encounter natural thermal and energy restrictions when evaluated against traditional home consoles.
