TL;DR

Linux 7.4 includes AMD PerfOpt, which reports say can boost Radeon iGPU AI workloads by 18% to 23%.

The Linux 7.4 kernel now includes the AMD PerfOpt feature. This feature allows integrated GPUs to bypass the IOMMU when they access system memory directly. AMD PerfOpt is enabled by default for the AMDGPU kernel graphics driver on systems using Radeon integrated graphics.

Reports say the feature can provide a performance boost of 18% to 23% for AI and LLM workloads on Radeon iGPUs. Users can verify if the AMDGPU driver has enabled PerfOpt on their system by looking for the term in dmesg kernel output.

The Linux 7.4 update also adds Broadcom BCM2712 IOMMU support for Raspberry Pi 5 display and multimedia devices. Additionally, Microsoft supplied a new driver for Hyper-V featuring para-virtualized IOMMU support.
