War Thunder dev server tests realistic tank steering mechanics
TL;DR
The War Thunder developer is testing new double-differential and dual transmission steering mechanics on the dev server ahead of the Eagle's Shadow update.
The War Thunder developer is testing new tank mobility mechanics on the dev server to align tracked vehicle handling with real-world physics. The update introduces double-differential steering, dual transmission, and planetary gear mechanisms.
War Thunder · official art via IGDBThe double-differential system splits engine power between the gearbox and a differential steering mechanism. While this design maintains speed during turns, it creates a larger turning radius that scales with the engaged gear. For example, the M1A1 Abrams turning radius ranges from 5.8 meters in first gear to 26.9 meters in fourth gear. Other tanks reach minimum turning radii between 30 and 70 meters at maximum gear.
To improve handling, the developer implemented a downshift feature that triggers when players brake or reverse while turning. Players can test the double-differential system on the dev server using the M1 Abrams variants, TKX, Type 10, Type 90, AMX-32, AMX-30 platforms, and Leopard 2 platforms excluding the Leopard 2K. Other performance improvements will release alongside the Eagle's Shadow major update.
