Vulkan version 1.4.366 is out, wrapping up two weeks of specification fixes, clarifications, and a single new application programming interface extension. Google engineers contributed the primary addition with the VK_GOOGLE_hdr_SMPTE_ST_2094_50_metadata extension. This update introduces dynamic metadata support directly into the Vulkan swapchain.

The underlying SMPTE ST 2094-50 standard was developed jointly by Google, Apple, and NBC Universal, and was only finalized in August. Its goal is to smooth out the visual experience when applications mix Standard Dynamic Range and High Dynamic Range content, specifically targeting brightness spikes and other visual inconsistencies. Google has also targeted Chrome and other software for integration following the standard completion. Further details on the specification updates and metadata extension remain available through GitHub repositories.
