TL;DR
Nvidia is investigating reports that the GeForce 621.01 driver causes video freezes and black screens. Users can roll back to driver 617.42 as a workaround.
Nvidia is investigating reports that the GeForce Game Ready Driver 621.01, released on October 21, causes video playback to freeze and screens to go black for several seconds. Users have reported these issues while using Chrome, Edge, Twitch, YouTube, and VLC. The problems affect RTX 5080 and RTX 4090 users. Some reports say the freezes happen when a game is started while a video is playing on another monitor.
Windows Event Viewer entries for Event ID 153, LiveKernelEvent 141, and LiveKernelEvent 117 have appeared on affected systems. These errors relate to the nvlddmkm driver and its recovery. The video issues are not listed in the official release notes for version 621.01.
An Nvidia employee has confirmed that a bug report is open and is asking affected users to email watchdog dump files from C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG to driverfeedback@nvidia.com. While a fix has not been announced, several users report that rolling back to the October 6 driver, version 617.42, resolves the instability.
