TL;DR

A modified RTX 2080 Ti using 2GB Samsung modules to reach 22GB of VRAM delivered up to a 73% performance increase in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 at 4K, according to reports.

Recent benchmarks of a modified RTX 2080 Ti show that doubling the VRAM from 11GB to 22GB can significantly improve performance in some 4K titles. The modification involves replacing the original 1GB memory chips with 2GB Samsung GDDR6 modules.

At 4K resolution, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 increased from approximately 30 FPS to 52 FPS, a 73% improvement. Spider Man 2 rose from 39 FPS to 64 FPS, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard went from 16 FPS to 27 FPS. These 4K tests used DLSS Performance and FSR Frame Generation where supported.

Improvements were more limited at 1440p with DLSS Quality enabled. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 saw a 29% increase in average frame rates and Spider Man 2 improved by approximately 22%. However, Cyberpunk 2077 and Gears of War: E Day showed no measurable difference at 1440p.

The extra memory does not increase the GPU's processing power or memory bandwidth. Because of this, games that fit within the original 11GB limit showed minimal gains. Reports also note that these modifications require specialized equipment and may cause reliability or compatibility issues.
