TL;DR

An open-source emulator called VBoy Color reportedly adds a four-color palette to Virtual Boy games via a hand-painted process.

An open-source emulator called VBoy Color aims to add color to Nintendo Virtual Boy games on desktop computers, Android devices, and Meta Quest VR headsets. The emulator uses an 8x8-pixel tile-based approach to assign colors from a four-color palette to areas that are monochrome red on the original hardware. Reports note this colorization stems from a hand-painted method, while custom packs are accessible for numerous classic titles.

The Meta Quest VR version can reportedly retain the original 3D effect, while the desktop and Android versions do not have stereoscopic depth. The colorization effect is reportedly less effective in games using 3D wireframe graphics, such as 3-D Tetris and Red Alarm. Reports say the project is largely vibe-coded with limited human involvement. Nintendo sold 770,000 Virtual Boy units worldwide.
