TL;DR

AMD says its FSR SDK 2.4 brings Vulkan support for upscaling and frame generation to feature parity with DirectX 12.

AMD released the FSR SDK 2.4, which includes FSR Upscaling 4.1.2. This version adds Vulkan support for upscaling and frame generation effects at feature parity with DirectX 12. Developers must integrate these SDK DLLs into their games to use Vulkan support. Existing Vulkan games using FSR 3.1 will not receive automatic driver upgrades to ML-based upscaling. To be eligible for automatic upgrades through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, Vulkan games must integrate FSR Upscaling 4.1.2, FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2, or FSR Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0 or later.

The SDK brings ML-based upscaling to RDNA 2 hardware and various APUs. The RDNA 4 architecture uses a full FP8 model on Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs, while RDNA 3 architecture uses a full INT8 model on Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs. AMD says a lightweight INT8 model, which is less than half the size of the full INT8 model, is available for more constrained hardware. The full INT8 model runs on Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 Series GPUs. Reports say the lightweight model runs on Ryzen AI 9 300, Ryzen AI 9 400, Ryzen Z2 A, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, and Ryzen Z2 Extreme. AMD says results for this lightweight model vary by hardware, resolution, game, and quality mode. FSR Ray Regeneration and FSR Radiance Caching are still DirectX 12 effects in this release.

Background In October, the OptiScaler community modded FSR 4.1.2 to run on Intel Arc GPUs using dedicated XMX hardware. Our earlier story
