Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan says he has spoken with AMD CEO Lisa Su about possible cooperation, though specific areas of partnership have not been announced.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan says he has discussed possible cooperation with AMD CEO Lisa Su. The comment was made during an October 24 fireside chat with Jimmy Cheng, president of the Chinese American Semiconductor Professional Association. Tan did not specify which areas the two companies might work together on, and neither company has announced a formal agreement.

Tan stated that Intel must reclaim leadership in the CPU market. To do this, he said the company will move toward tailoring chips, such as Xeon, to specific customer needs. This is a shift from previous practices where Intel was less willing to modify designs for individual clients. He highlighted four growth avenues, aiming for a couple of them to eventually generate roughly 10 percent of company revenue each.

Regarding Intel's manufacturing, Tan said the 18A process is active in volume production. The 0.5 version of the 14A process design kit is out, and he noted that the 0.9 version is coming next. The subsequent release intended for manufacturing is slated for early 2027.

While no manufacturing deal with AMD has been announced, the companies already share some software plumbing. AMD recently began folding its ZenDNN optimizations into Intel’s oneDNN library to assist with PyTorch CPU inference.
