TL;DR

Wei Zhao says the RADV Vulkan driver will enable VK_EXT_host_image_copy by default for RDNA1 GPUs in Mesa 27.0.

The open-source Radeon RADV Vulkan driver will enable the VK_EXT_host_image_copy extension by default for RDNA1 GPUs. This change is part of the upcoming Mesa 27.0 release. Wei Zhao authored the update to move RDNA1 from experimental status to default enablement, following previous Navi 1x regressions that have since been addressed.

This extension permits direct data transfers between host memory and images, which reduces overhead and benefits integrated graphics. While RDNA2 (GFX10.3) and newer hardware had this enabled by default earlier this year, RDNA1 now joins them. Wei Zhao also added experimental support for older GFX9 era GPUs, which requires using an existing environment variable.
