Two unofficial PC ports of the 2005 God of War title, gow-native-pc and gow-pc-port, have been published on GitHub. These projects use static recompilation to translate the original MIPS architecture executable into C++, allowing the game to run natively on Windows without an emulator. Both ports require players to provide their own legal copy of the game assets or ROM to function.
God of War · official art via IGDBVnnc1 developed the gow-native-pc port. It is a work in progress that is playable from start to finish, though some scenes may see performance dips below 60 FPS. Because the internal game logic is hardcoded to 60Hz, gameplay remains capped at 60 FPS. The second port allows the screen refresh rate to be manually configured to 60, 120, or 144 Hz.
Recent optimization updates for the recompilation effort included version 3.0.0 introducing a feature to prepare the next frame while the current one is drawing, and version 3.0.1 improving code speed and reducing thread wake-ups. At the time of writing, the version was up to v0.4.0.
