Nexus Mods updated its generative AI policy on November 3, 2026. Site owner Foledinho stated the platform will not implement an outright ban on AI mods. Instead, the site now requires mandatory disclosure of AI usage.
The policy divides AI use into three categories: AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted. Authors using AI must provide a public explanation of how and where the technology was used. Challenged disclosures might lead to requests for project files and commit histories. AI-generated images used as deceptive in-game screenshots are prohibited.
New labels will be placed on mod pages right after adult material indicators. While tags exist, search filters to hide specific types of AI content are planned for a later update. Existing mod authors have a 60-day grace period to comply with these rules, which ends on January 2, 2027. Failing to fix issues by then could lead to site bans, account restrictions, or formal warnings.
Staff will check adherence by hand, urging community members to report missing labels. The site says it will not train AI on user mods or sell or license them to parties that do. Additionally, a new permission setting for using mods to train AI now defaults to "Ask me," meaning authors must provide written consent first. In 2026, AI-Generated Content mods received 2.13% of all Donation Points.
